Important Changes to your debit card
The Change
The Federal Reserve Board has passed new regulations that require us to remove you from our Courtesy Pay program, which covers transactions when funds are not available, on July 1, 2010 unless we receive an Opt-In from you.
What this means for you
Currently, if you qualify, Courtesy Pay protects you, should you overdraw your account. While Courtesy Pay is in effect, a merchant is never aware that the funds were not available in your account. Under the new regulations, if you do not Opt-In, we will not be able to cover one-time debit card transactions if funds are not available in your account at the time of the transaction. The debit transaction will be denied. Insufficient funding may result in any or all of the following:
- The merchant will be forced to cancel your transaction or obtain another type of payment
- The credit union may assess an insufficient funds fee (currently $30)
- The merchant may assess a fee
- The merchant may report the incident to Telecheck - Telecheck is a company that monitors the quality of your check writing, much the way credit bureaus monitor your credit transactions. A report to Telecheck may negatively impact your rating and may restrict future debit & check-writing.
What we don’t want for our members
- To be in line at the grocery store, after shopping for hours, just to be denied at checkout
- To enjoy a nice dinner out and not be able to pay when the bill comes
- To promise your child a day out to the movies only to be denied for ticket purchase
- And so on
Your Options
· Opt in to our Courtesy Pay program and we will continue to cover your accounts as we always have.
· Do nothing and you will automatically be opted out on July 1, 2010.
How to Opt-In
Mail, Fax or e-mail the Opt-In form or by visiting us at any of our branch offices (Trenton, Flat Rock, Grosse Ile or Gibraltar)
Please contact us if you have any questions. It is our goal to continue to provide you with Courtesy Pay protection!
(Please note- Courtesy Pay coverage is offered at our discretion. We do not guarantee that we will authorize or pay any type of transaction)
